A Growing Array of Options for Fibroids

“This is an incredibly interesting disease,” Dr. Walker said. “It’s the elephant in the room in that it has a huge impact on women’s lives, yet you almost don’t hear it discussed because it’s not cancer.”

As more women today are working and may want to delay childbearing, hysterectomy is not the only option to treat fibroids, as it had been in the past. There are increasingly less invasive procedures available that allow women to avoid surgery, keep their fertility and return to work in less time. This article discusses uterine artery embolization, myomectomy, and MRI-guided ultrasound. These new procedures are part of a growing interest in this condition that is extremely common among women, yet has often been avoided in the past.
