Pregnancy After Uterine Artery Embolization

June 4th, 2009

A recent study published in the Journal of Roentgenology reported on pregnancies and their outcome after uterine artery embolization for symptomatic uterine fibroids.

From 2001 to 2004, 102 patients (mean age, 35.7 years; range, 20–48 years) with symptomatic uterine fibroids underwent uterine artery embolization.

Results:     Among 102 women who underwent bilateral uterine artery embolization, 23 (22.5%) were seeking to become pregnant, and 14 of the 23 (61%) became pregnant. Fourteen pregnancies were spontaneous, and one was achieved by zygote intrafallopian transfer. Two miscarriages occurred, one in the 12th and one in the 16th week of gestation. The other 13 pregnancies went to term, were uncomplicated, and ended in elective cesarean delivery. All of the neonates were healthy with Apgar scores greater than 8.

Conclusion:     Uterine artery embolization can serve as a substitute for invasive operations such as hysterectomy and myomectomy. Additional studies, including prospective, randomized comparisons with myomectomy, should be performed.

  1. Pregnancy after embo is truly a blessing for some of us. I am scheduled to have embo on July 13, 2009 and I decree that I will be blessed to carry a child full term

I am going to have surgery on 08/27/09, UAE. UAE instead of myomectomy because where the fibroid is located. I hope that after this surgery most of the problems related to this fibroid are resolved. I am hoping to get pregnant, and carry full term, but above all have a healthy, full of life and happy child. I really wish the best for all the women who are undergoing this treatment, and wish that UAE really works for all of us in accomplishing our dreams.

I had my UAE done in August, 2009 and just found out I’m 6 weeks pregnant. I’m so happy and nervous at the same time. I read online that there are some risks of miscarriage, placenta previa with bleeding, low birth weights, and preterm deliveries. I also read that there are many cases of women that have normal pregnancies and healthy babies. I’m just terrified, especially because I just got the procedure done 3 months ago. Anyhow, I just thank God for giving me the opportunity to have another baby, and pray for my pregnancy to be a normal one and for my baby to be healthy.

After reading the above posts, I feel encouraged about UAE. I also have fibroids and I have been given a date for a myomectomy. I am so scared and wish to avoid surgery. I intend to cancel the appointment and go for UAE instead. Although I was told by my gynaecologist that my fibroids are very large, 12cm and 9cm respectively, I still believe the UAE will be of benefit in my particular case and will likely succeed. I so desire to have my own baby in my arms! I trust and believe that God will answer my prayers.

I wish all women in the same condition the best they could ever imagine.
