Uterine Fibroid Embolization: Safe and Effective

August 19th, 2009

American Journal of Obstetrics and GynecologyA recent article published by The American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology concluded that Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) is a safe and effective treatment for uterine fibroids, specifically when presented with traditional surgical options such as hysterectomy and myomectomy.

The article reviewed multiple studies and clinical trials with thousands of women spanning over a period of up to 7 years. The studies identified post-procedure results, short- and mid-term outcomes, long-term outcomes, side effects and fertility after UFE. The clinical trials compared UFE to Hysterectomy and/or Myomectomy measuring length of hospital stay, improvement in pain, efficacy of reproduction, quality of life and cost effectiveness. The positive results for UFE were impressive:

  • UFE presented less risk with few complications
  • UFE recovery time was much faster
  • UFE was typically the most cost effective procedure
  • UFE experienced the highest patient satisfaction rate (91% said they would recommend it to a friend)
  • UFE displayed a high success rate, up to 94%

Dr. Linda D. Bradley, the author of the article, concluded that UFE is a safe, effective and durable alternative to hysterectomy and myomectomy, and recommended that physicians present UFE as an option to qualified patients that have uterine fibroids, especially if they are facing possible surgery. Dr. Bradley also emphasized the importance of collaborative and comprehensive care (from diagnosis to follow-up) in the success of UFE.
