Fibroids: The Hidden Health Epidemic

August 7th, 2009

While everybody gets riled up about these periodic health issues like swine flu, there’s a real epidemic out there among the female population that NOBODY’S talking about.  Maybe because the symptoms are a little embarrassing. Maybe because it can ruin your life, but it’s not actually fatal.

Or maybe because it’s a problem only women have…so it’s going to take women to fire up awareness.

Uterine fibroids are the big/little problem of most women over 40. Literally one in four will have them.  African American women are at even greater risk.  Uterine fibroids can cause uncontrolled bleeding, terrible pain, fatigue and complete depression because your life is out of control. Most gynecologists will tell you to get surgery. Overwelmingly, in fact, they will recommend a hysterectomy.   Hey, no uterus, no fibroids. Just try to imagine if men were told to solve a prostate problem with castration?  Still, for years and years hysterectomy has been an accepted course of treatment.  It’s led to hundreds of thousands of unnecessary operations on women.   The real tragedy is that there is a proven, non-surgical cure for fibroids.  It’s called Uterine Artery Embolization.  And most women will never know about it.

Several years ago, in my 40’s, I had UFE and it was quite successful. I began running for exercise again and a couple years later I hiked all over the Sierras, including a climb up Mt. Whitney with a backpack. I felt strong and confident. It took about a year for the masses to shrink completely, but I had physical relief within a few weeks. Recovery from the surgery was speedy and I never had to use prescription pain meds. I have now completed menopause and went through that phase with little discomfort.

I too am suffering with numerous fibroids that have caused an enlarged uterus. The kicker for me, even though I am going to be 52 yrs old in November, is that my sister died of a malignant fibroid that spread some 27 years ago at age 37. So since my fibroids have been causing me trouble (over 3 years plus now), I have had this in the back of my mind. My doctor tells me how rare and that if we just wait and see, once I enter menopause they will shrink. I have recently gone to another doctor for second opinion and he is giving me GnRH and then will do the DaVinci hysterecomy. A less invasive procedure. To ease my mind due to my family history, that is the best way to rule out cancer.

    Shirley,

Being that you are looking to get rid of your fibroids non-surgically, you may want to look into Uterine Fibroid Embolization. The procedure is safe, quick, and best of all, you don’t have to worry about the “cutting” that is associated with other fibroid removal surgery procedures. Many women have benefited from the results of UFE and have found that it is a preferred alternative to other traditional fibroid surgeries.

To find out more about how you too can benefit from UFE, please feel free to call us at 310-208-2442 and schedule a consultation.
