If you caught the October 1st premiere of ABC’s primetime show Private Practice, you may have noticed Dr. Addison (Kate Walsh) performing Uterine Artery Embolization (UAE). In fact, the fluoroscopy footage shown during the surgical scene, about 1/2 way through the show, was actual footage provided by our very own Dr. Bruce McLucas.
Here’s how the story goes (careful, this is a spoiler)…
The character Violet (Amy Brennemen) had to have life saving surgery following a traumatic delivery. During surgery, they could not stop the bleeding and Dr. Addison was faced with having to decide between hysterectomy or Uterine Artery Embolization. They decided to embolize in order to save her uterus and stop the bleeding. The embolization was successful and Violet survived with her uterus intact.
The Fibroid Treatment Collective is very proud that ABC selected Dr. McLucas’ fluoroscopy footage, but most of all, we’re thrilled that Uterine Embolization is gaining momentum in the public eye and that woman around the world will be able to make a more educated decision about how to successfully treat their fibroids while keeping their uterus and their fertility.
