If menopause often reduces fibroid symptoms, why bother with treatment?

April 28th, 2010

If you’ve considered ‘just hanging in there’ until you reach menopause in the hopes fibroid symptoms will lesson, make sure you ask yourself a few questions first.

  • What are my current hormone levels?
  • How close am I to menopause?
  • How severe are my symptoms?
  • What are the possible complications if my fibroids continue to grow?

Menopause can reduce fibroid symptoms as the body produces less and less estrogen. And it is quite true that not all fibroids need to be treated. But if you are experiencing discomfort, it’s most likely that your fibroids have already reached a size where they can negatively affect your health. You should also know that if you decide to pursue any kind of hormone therapy during menopause, your fibroids may react by growing even more vigorously. Embolization addresses the issue safely and simply. It will not only give you relief by shrinking your fibroids, it prevents recurrence. While the ‘wait it out’ approach may work in some cases, taking action early is still your best approach to restoring and keeping good health.

I think in general, treatment is always the best option, if you’re able to withstand the treatment. I know many women who’ve tried the ‘wait it out’ approach, both with fibroid symptoms and menopause symptoms, mainly due to their attitudes towards the medical treatments, and almost all of them have regretted their decisions. I’ve personally tried herbal treatments with mixed success.
