Can fibroids cause me to gain weight? I was diagnosed a while ago and I feel like I am getting bigger and bigger and am also experiencing this “bloated” feeling.
What you are experiencing is quite common among women diagnosed with fibroids. Often times, benign uterine growths can grow to large sizes, ranging from microscopic, to the size of a grapefruit, or even as large as a 6 month pregnancy. For this reason, if your fibroid(s) grow to a reasonably large size, it can often be mistaken for weight gain. Fibroids also have the ability to cause distention of the abdomen, making a women appear as if she is pregnant. Currently, there isn’t any research that supports the idea of fibroids being a causal factor for marked weight gain.
In addition to this weight gain, you explained that you are also feeling bloated, which is another common symptom. This symptom may appear as a result of the bulk or weight of the fibroids pressing on other structures in the pelvic area. Ultimately, this can also cause you to experience urinary incontinence, pain during sex, as well as constipation.
If you feel that your fibroid(s) are causing you to feel uncomfortable or are becoming a burden on your quality of life. We urge you to see a physician about treatment options.
