Can I Have Children After UFE?

July 12th, 2010

Studies have shown that fertility usually has not been affected among women who have undergone embolization. Several women who desire future fertility are considered candidates and many of these women become pregnant and give birth after Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE) without any issues. However, we do not have enough evidence yet to confidently offer UFE as a primary treatment of fibroid related infertility. Myomectomy has traditionally been the first option for women who wish to become pregnant. When fibroids recur after myomectomy, or if a woman has other health conditions or reasons to avoid surgery, UFE may be the best option.

With Myomectomy , however, there are several complications associated with the procedure.  These complications include blood loss (a frequent problem when large fibroids are removed), uterine scarring (which impairs fertility) and a fairly significant incidence of regrowth (about 30%).  Additionally, the recovery period after having undergone this procedure can last up to 8 weeks, restricting patients from taking part in their routine activities.  Because of these disadvantages, some women chose to have UFE instead, yet the risks and effects of UFE on future fertility and pregnancy should be discussed with your doctor before undergoing any procedure.
