Fibroids and Weight Gain

January 31st, 2011

Ever since I found out I have fibroids, I feel like I have gained weight. Do my fibroids cause me to gain weight?

Fibroids can range from the size of a walnut to the size of a cantaloupe or even larger. Doctors measure the size of the fibroid in relationship to the size of the uterus during pregnancy. For example, a large fibroid tumor might cause the uterus to become the size of a six or seven month pregnancy. Fibroids can exist as a single large tumor or as a cluster of small ones.

Symptoms of fibroids can range in severity. Some women experience no symptoms while others experience uncomfortable and even painful symptoms. Women sometimes underestimate the impact of their symptoms because they have gotten used to the excessive bleeding, pain and the pressure that the fibroids can cause. When there are symptoms, they vary depending on the location and size of the fibroid tumors.

Common symptoms of fibroids include:

  • An enlarged abdomen, which may be mistaken for weight gain or pregnancy
  • Anemia from heavy menstrual bleeding, which lowers the red blood cell count. This causes a woman to feel constantly tired.
  • Heavy menstrual bleeding (sometimes with clots) and long monthly periods
  • Pain during sex
  • Pain in the back of the legs

If you have been diagnosed with fibroids or suspect that you may have fibroids, feel free to give us a call at 866-362-6463 so that we may schedule you for a FREE consultation. This way, he may discuss treatment options with you and you can decide whether UAE is a viable options for you.

Yes, you definitely do have several other options to treat fibroids. Take a look at this article to help you get a better idea of what your alternatives might be: http://www.fibroids.com/news-blog/2010/04/treatment-type/

Although the answer to whether you will be able to conceive after having embolization differs from one patient to the next, many women have been able to have children after undergoing Uterine Firboids Embolization. There are always risks related to having a procedure done, but you can be rest assured that many women in your position have remained fertile after having the treatment done.

Additionally, having UAE done may also allow your uterus to decrease in size as the fibroids shrink, often giving this appearance of having “lost weight” since your stomach area will decrease.

If you are interested in finding out more, please give the Fibroid Treatment Collective a call at 866-362-6463 and they will help you answer any additional quesitons or concerns you might have. Good luck!

  7. beth says:

The answer to this question all depends on whether the fibroids are affecting your ability to get pregnant and/or if they are causing symtoms that are having a negative affect on your quality of life. Several women have fibroids but do not experience any symptoms and therefore find it unnecessary to get treatment.

Give us a call at 866-362-6463 and schedule a FREE phone consultation with the doctor so that he can analyze your individual health situation and discuss whether treatment is needed.

Hi, I had a 9x12cm fibroid and a few smaller fibroids. I didn`t want myomectomy and last year finally I found a doctor in Croatia and had UAE. But he made embolization with one side of my uterus where was the biggest fibroid. He told me that I had atherosclerosis on the other side and because of that he couldn`t perform completely embolization.
My uterus is still big and fibroids are there, only the biggest fibroid is not growing any more, but I still can feal hard uterus when I touch my abdomen. Ultra sound can not show the real situation (how much reduced the largest myoma)
I am satisfied but I am still worried. What do you suggest, is this enough?

  10. Vanja says:

    Addition:
I am 39, don`t have any problems with pain or heavy bleeding

  11. beth says:

Thank you for your inquiry. In regards to your situation, if the physician sees that carrying out UAE on the side with atherosclerosis poses a threat to your health, then it is best to do so. However, it may serve you well to get a second opinion as well. If you would like to have a one-on-one consultation with Dr. Bruce McLucas, please give us a call at 866-362-6463 to set one up. Additionally, you may request a free consultation by clicking here. He will assess your individual health situation and you may ask him any pressing questions that you may have.

    Best of Luck,

How large can your stomach get. I have 3 fibroids. I look 8 months pregnant. What info do you have on this?

  18. FTC says:

Fibroids can and will cause abdominal bloating and in some cases will cause a woman to appear pregnant. Fibroids inside of the uterus cause the uterus to stretch, treatment is the key to changing the appearance of your stomach, the sooner you treat your fibroids the sooner you will notice your stomach going down. I have an 8cm fibroid in my uterus and will hve surgery to remove it. Could someone please tell me what to expect and the recovery time? Thanks

  20. beth says:

    Hello,

What type of surgery are you planning to have? If by “surgery” you mean that you are having en Embolization procedure done, then I recommend that you look through this article to give you an idea as to what to expect before, during and after the procedure.

Also, if you are are referring to Embolization, you should note that it is not considered a “surgery”. There is no cutting, scalpels, sutures or scarring and you won’t be unconscious or exposed to the risks of general anesthetic. Additionally, Embolization, or UAE, is safe, effective and usually allows patents to go back to their regular routines in less than a week, compared to the 6-8 weeks necessary for recovery from a traditional surgery (Hysterectomy or Myomectomy).

    Hope this helps!

I have 7- 10 fibroids and they all range in different sizes I have no bleedinging. i have had previous myomectomy 2 years ago. should I attempt another or go another route? help!

  23. FTC says:

Hi Cheryl. It is not uncommon for fibroids to return after having a Myomectomy. With Uterine Fibroid Embolization (UFE), the fibroids are basically starved which causes them to shrink and they do not return. Most women with symptomatic fibroids are candidates for UFE, but should consult with a doctor to determine if it is the right choice for you. Feel free to request a free consult with an FTC heath care professional by calling 866.362.6463 or by clicking on the Live Chat button. Best of health to you.

The doctor told me I have a 7 cm fibroid above my bellybutton, but she writes down 20cm in her consultation notes. She says I must have a TAH, but I still want to get married and have at least one child. Should I get a 2nd opinion, what are my options, and do u think I should keep the fibroid & try to get pregnant when I marry? Confused and need advice.

  30. DLG says:

I am a 50 yr old menopausal woman (almost 1 yr) that recently was told that I have a fibroid (or fibroids) causing my uterus to be the size of a 4 month pregnancy. I have also had a mild stroke (in 2011). I go this coming Tuesday for an ultra sound. The gyno doc made a comment about a hysterectomy, but I really don’t feel I can do that because I can’t miss that much time from work, and I am concerned because of the stroke last year. I am just curious what other alternatives I would have.

  31. jamie says:

I have had many symptoms over the last 8 weeks such as paint in the lower right ab, constipation, hair loss, tired all the time, sick to stomach, no energy, heavy periods and migraines. I had a CT and they said my uterus was full of fibroids. They recommended I have and ultrasound. I am worried because when I look these symptoms up it leads to Ovarian Cancer…..is it possible I also have cyst that they are not seeing. Are all these symptoms of fibroids????? So worried please comment.

Hello ladies(yeah, always the ladies)!I have just got back from hospital after ultra sound and a camera thingy!Bit embarassing, but not so bad after i took my socks off too!Well, bit shocked at the fact that i have a 6-8cm fibroid hanging around.I had a sore pelvic region for a long time and as usual, tried to ignore it and get on with the business that is life!(truthfully.,too scared to go to docs).Anyway,i thought enough was enough,i was beginning to struggle with my work.I had a post menopausal bleed and that kicked me up the donkey and frightened me into seeking help.I was convinced i had cancer and bravely stuck out my chin whilst waiting the diagnosis.I had 2 biopsys(?)taken and am awaiting the outcome, but the doctor said he thinks its all good. Please go to your doctors,if you have anything that isnt right, you know when that is.Save yourself a couple of years of sleepless nights and dark circles under your eyes. Its not brave to be silent, its plain silly.Good luck to you all.xxx
